The Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) program is an equally generous and complex tax incentive. However, The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and other organizations such as  SREDucation.ca and The InGenuity Group offer educational opportunities to assist claimants with the SR&ED application process.

May 9, 2019:  The InGenuity Group was represented by Elizabeth Lance, MA, MASc. invited moderator for the SRED Stakeholder virtual conference. This full afternoon session appealed to SR&ED preparers, claimants, or anyone with an interest in the SR&ED program in Canada.

Agenda topics included new CRA directives, statistics by region, new ICT software examples and a review of recent SR&ED tax cases and judgements.

Upcoming Events

The CRA is offering two 3.5 hour in-person seminars in Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver summarizing the financial aspects of the SR&ED program for financial/accounting staff already familiar with the basics of SR&ED. They will explain how to complete the T661 form as well as offering an overview of the Investment Tax Credit calculation.

While there is no charge, pre-registration is required due to seating limitations. These events are English only and will take place on the following dates:

June 26, 2019, in Vancouver

October 22, 2019, in Ottawa

October 29, 2019, in Toronto

Be sure to clearly indicate your choice of venue when you register.

Past Events

The CRA hosted a free online webinar on the SR&ED program, offering a general overview. This webinar explained the SR&ED eligibility criteria, what expenditures qualify, and how to file a claim. The webinar lasts for 90 minutes.1 

 

The 90-minute eligibility of work in SR&ED projects containing software development webinar is available for playback, along with a transcript. However, there is no indication of when a new live webinar on the topic will be held.

Seminars

The CRA also offers in-person seminars on a variety of topics to help businesses gain a deeper understanding of specific topics that relate to SR&ED.2 The CRA offered seminars on SR&ED financing issues in Mississauga on the dates listed below: 

  • January 30, 2018. 
  • March 20, 2018. 
  • May 29, 2018.
